A Case of Hemolytic Disease of Newborn due to Anti-E

Abstract
Anti-E is the Rh antibody that found second most commonly after anti-D, but very seldom causes hemolytic disease. Recently we had a severe case of hemolytic disease of newborn due to anti-E.
The one-day-old female infant was transfered due to severe jaundice. There were no ABO and Rh(D) incompatibilities between mother and baby. The direct antiglobulin test was positive on baby's red cells and the maternal serum showed a positive
antibody
screening test. The laboratory findings warranted hemolytic disease of newborn due to other Rh antibodies. The specificity of unexpected antibody was anti-E in maternal serum and eluate from the fetal RBC. The titer of anti-E in maternal serum
was
1:4096. The baby was treated with four times of exchange transfusion and phototherapy for 9 days and discharged in recovery. (Kor J Blood Transf 4(1): 117-121, 1993)
